The Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo, a DoubleTree by Hilton property, is a landmark bayfront resort composed of two guestroom towers with approximately 380 rooms, a dedicated event center, gym and conference facilities serving both destination travelers and large-scale gatherings. Our firm was responsible for the interior design of all public spaces, the signature restaurant, and guest rooms, creating a cohesive design experience throughout the property.
The arrival sequence and lobby was inspired by the three volcanoes visible upon entry, grounding the interior architecture in Hawai?i’s powerful landscape. Custom reception desks are sculpted and proportioned to reflect the scale and rhythm of the volcanoes, translating monumental natural forms into refined, human-scaled architectural elements.
A central seating area is defined by a custom cocoon like wood structure inspired by Hawaiian folklore, craftsmanship, and the birth of the islands and is surrounded by cultural artifacts thoughtfully displayed in a museum like setting.
The restaurant interior, also designed as part of the project, continues this narrative through materiality, proportion, and detail—offering an elevated yet relaxed dining environment that complements the hotel’s coastal setting.
The guest rooms were designed to reflect the same design philosophy, pairing clean architectural lines with warm materials and a restrained palette to create calm, timeless interiors that frame views of Hilo Bay and the surrounding landscape. Together, the interiors unify hospitality, culture, and architecture, reinforcing a sense of continuity from arrival through private retreat.
